Yahoo Sports’ Draft Live crew reacts to the Boston Celtics’ selection of Real Madrid wing Hugo González with the 28th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Let’s chat who the Boston Celtics just picked up Hugo Gonzalez, uh, the winger out of Madrid, Spain, um, KOC, talk to me about his player comp.

I mean, Gonzalez is the type of guy that I think for Boston brings him, he has Celtics type of culture versatile defensively, plays hard and with Gonzalez didn’t play a lot this past year for Real Madrid, but any time you did see him get some opportunities, you see more than just hustler.
Defender spot up shooter, you see a guy that can do a little bit off the dribble and so I think for the Celtics with this 28th pick you’re getting a guy that you hope is a role player.
The comparison I have for him is Josh Green in the draft guide, strong athletic wing, raw when they entered the league, but for Gonzalez, ultimately the type of guy that you’re betting on in the long term, and as a floor hustler and maybe taps into some of that creation in the long term.
I mean.

So many unknowns to this young man.
Didn’t play a lot last year for Real Madrid, but when he stepped on the floor, you saw those things that you mentioned, uh KO.
So I, I, I do think that there’s a lot of upside here, especially with his frame, his shooting potential, how hard he plays, cause that’s what I love.
I love how hard he competes every single time he steps on the floor, um, but there’s just so many unknowns with him.
So I do think there’s a lot of upside, but I mean, how much do you have to lose if you’re the Celtics right now?
No.
I was nothing.
You don’t have like this is a gap year yeah yeah this this is what it is and the impressive thing for me was everybody talked about 2nd apron, 2nd Apron, all those things, and people don’t understand what that means.

Basically it means you don’t get your draft picks.
You can’t use any level of exceptions, you’re screwed, right?
You’re no longer screwed, so you were able to make this pick and not trade it off, not kick it down the road.
You were able to make this pick and maybe give this kid some runway to play this year.
Because you’ve got Jalen Brown still.
If you, if you’re not trading Jaylen Brown, if you’re not trading Derek White, I think there’s some question about that.
But you have the open runway for this year with Anthony Simmons coming in, George Nang coming in.
I see the vision of a competitive team.
Not a good team, a great team playing.

Like if they get to the plan next year, I think a lot of people assuming nothing else crazy happens, a lot of people will consider that a success, and who knows with Jason Tatum and the Achilles injury how quickly he can come back from that, especially having the surgery the next day.
They say that really speeds up the recovery process.
Instead of 12 months it can be 9.
Don’t forget about the Boston Celtics next year.
